The Story of Broke

Annie Leonard returns with Season 2 of The Story of Stuff! Watch her new movie, The Story of Broke: Why There's Still Plenty of Money to Build a Better Future, to bust the myth that the United States is broke. Annie talks about corporate tax loopholes, enormous tax breaks for the richest 1%, and military spending, and then she breaks down the different types of subsidies that the government hands out to big businesses - all of which give the impression that the country is too broke to build a healthy, green economy. My hope is that this information helps us realize that we can't keep electing the wrong people, people who will only continue this disastrous trend that offers such a bleak future for the generations to come. Please share this video with your friends and family!

  1. This is so great and so depressing at the same time. How did we get to this crazy place? It is just so.... sad.

It is time to demand better. Occupy!

  2. It really is a fantastic job she does... and depressing that so many people support these kinds of decisions even as they destroy us.

Hopefully we can be part of the generation that changes all that.

  4. I love these videos. They speak so clearly and convincingly and cut through all the political garbage our elected officials spout for not wanting to rock the boat. It is ridiculous that so much of our income goes to supporting things we don't approve of and don't remotely benefit from. Reminds me of that quote: "If you're not outraged, you're not paying attention."

  5. Sherry - Yep, it's quite sad. Shocking, really, that there's so much money to begin with, and somehow it all gets spent before we get to the important stuff like health care and education.

  6. Marc - Absolutely, Annie presents the information so well, so clearly, and in such an easy-to-understand manner... and yet people still vote for idiots! Please share this within your social network to get the word out to those who have no clue this is going on.

  7. Katherine - I look forward to the rest of the movies she'll be doing in Season 2. I guess the idea is to break down every part of the Dinosaur Economy she described in The Story of Stuff, and make videos about each one.

  8. Jennifer - So true! And most people aren't paying attention. In fact, I'd say a lot of people know there's something unfair going on but would rather not find out exactly what that is because then they'd have to take action, which is scary/challenging/exhausting. Still, that's no excuse...

  9. Thanks so much for sharing Andrea. Annie does such a nice job presenting important information, surrounding important issues, in a simple, easy to understand manner. I hope she keeps them coming!

  10. Me too! We need more folks like Annie to help make complicated information not only easy to understand but also interesting. It's frustrating when I try to explain things and my "audience" tunes out because it's dry. Annie keeps things relevant to her viewers, that's for sure.

  11. Thanks for sharing. Her videos make so much sense. I'd love to sit every American down for 8 minutes and show them just one of her videos. Annie suggests voting in new politicians that aren't lead astray by corporate power, but isn't that what we thought we were doing when we elected Obama? So few politicians aren't corrupt. It seems like we need a different plan to clean up the current "democratic system" and move away from The Dinosaur Economy.

  12. Emily - Tell me about it. When you think about it, if the average American spends two hours a day watching TV (and I think that's an outdated statistic), that means they're watching 30 minutes of ads every day! Imagine taking just 8 of those minutes and watching this video instead.

Also, I think there's no such thing as a non-corrupt politician, they just fall on different points on a scale of less to more corrupt!
